Cinderellas dominate NFL playoffs

Cinderellas dominate NFL playoffs

Cinderella story.

It’s not just the mantra of Carl the greenskeeper in “Caddyshack.” It could also be the theme for this year’s NFL playoffs when it comes to quarterbacks.

The 2008 class of playoff quarterbacks might not be the finest ever, but it could be the most interesting. There is at least a chance one or both of the quarterbacks in Super Bowl XLIII will represent a Cinderella story of fairy tale proportions.

On Sunday, the Baltimore Ravens play at the Miami Dolphins. This matches a rookie, Joe Flacco, who couldn’t find playing time at Pitt, then transferred to Delaware where he eventually became a first-round draft pick, against Chad Pennington, who was rudely dumped by the New York Jets. The Jets and Brett Favre, by the way, will be watching Pennington play this weekend from the toasty confines of postseason exile.

Also in the AFC, the Tennessee Titans have a bye. That will give fans another week to ponder the astonishing rise from the ashes of given-up-for-washed-up Kerry Collins.

In the NFC on Saturday, the Atlanta Falcons visit Arizona to tangle with the Cardinals. Here are two extremes: rookie Matt Ryan, who helped turn the Falcons completely around after the Michael Vick horror, against Kurt Warner, a two-time NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP who, at age 37, was only supposed to provide insurance for Matt Leinart. Instead, here he is. Again.

And don’t forget Donovan McNabb. Not long ago he was ridiculed, and fans and media were predicting where he would be playing next season. Now he is at the top of his game, leading the Philadelphia Eagles against the Vikings in Minnesota.

Cinderella story? Bill Murray should be announcing these NFL playoffs.
