Memory of the year: Woods wins duel at the U.S. Open

Of all the memories in a memorable year, the epic duel between Rocco Mediate, left, and Tiger Woods at the U.S. Open in June is the most memorable. Woods beat Mediate in a 19-hole playoff on Monday to claim his 14th major title, and he did it despite stress fractures in his left tibia and with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Woods had reconstructive knee surgery two days after his victory, ending his season. Tiger Woods. The U.S. Open. A bear at the U.S. Senior Open — and it wasn't Jack Nicklaus.Annika Sorenstam doing it her way. Paul Azinger doing it his way. Woods doing it anyway he had to.

Oh, what a year it was.

From the first tee shot in January to the last in December (yes, the professional golf season lasts that long), 2008 was a year to behold — and hear. And the thing with year-end lists is that they not only activate the memory banks, they trigger the imagination of what is ahead. For instance, we saw what Anthony Kim can do in 2008. Now what will he do in 2009? Challenge Woods? We saw Michelle Wie finally earn her playing card. Now what?

Here are a few memorable moments from 2008 — and a few guesses for 2009.
